IRISH ST LEGER

The Irish St Leger is the final one of the 5 Irish Classics, alongside the Irish 1000 and 2000 Guineas, the Irish Derby and the Irish Oaks (the filly’s equivalent). All of the Classics are contested at The Curragh in County Kildare. The Irish St Leger is run over a mile and six furlongs (2816 metres) and is usually held in September. The first Irish St Leger took place in 1915, well after its English counterpart, and was confined to 3 year old colts and fillies. The first horse to win the Irish Triple Crown (Irish Derby, Irish 2000 Guineas and St Leger) was Museum (SR 1991) in 1935. The only other horse to do so was Windsor Slipper (SR 2035) in 1942. In 1983 the conditions of the race changed when it was opened up to all horses, whatever their age including geldings. It meant that it could be won by a horse more than once, and between 2001 and 2004 Vinnie Roe won it on four consecutive occasions.
